For most condensation predictions, a simple vapour diffusion (Glaser) calculation is enough. For others, we must use more advanced numerical methods.
Heat and moisture analysis, sometimes known as HAM analysis, is different from Glaser calculations because it also considers capillary moisture flows as well as vapour diffusion. The calculation also allows the user to be much more specific as orientation, inclination and local climate data can all have an effect on the moisture transfers through the construction. The other big differences are that HAM analysis is transient-state; HAM analysis is multi-year; and HAM analysis can be one- or two-dimensional.
Normally, we would recommend HAM analysis using WUFI Pro or WUFI 2D software for solid masonry wall constructions insulated with an internal wall insulation system, particularly when the solid masonry wall is stone and is located in areas with severe or very severe precipitation. Using HAM analysis, we can check for risk of freeze-thaw damage in masonry, dry rot in timber, mould growth and interstitial condensation.
We carry out these calculations following the guidance in BS 5250 and BS EN 15026.
