Thermal Economics is delighted to be shortlisted in the Innovation in insulation category for its ThermaEdge product in the Build It Awards 2018. The annual awards celebrate all aspects of self-build and renovation and look to promote the recognition of innovation and excellence in the custom and self build home sector.
Thermal Economics entered its thermal bridging solution for the innovation in insulation award. There are numerous challenges faced in overcoming thermal bridging:
- Often there is very little space for insulation.
- It is difficult to fix insulation in place properly because other components are in the way.
- A thinner product with the same product performance as the main insulation is usually very expensive.
If these challenges are not overcome, the thermal bridging will be visible by damp patches and mould growth.

Alreflex Thermaedge – the ease of installation
Alreflex ThermaEdge is a thermal bridging solution that is effortlessly installed and only requires basic DIY skills. It is a flexible roll that will wrap over obtrusive objects such as damp proof membranes to ensure that the line of insulation continues around the ground floor junction to stop any thermal bridging. It is suitable for masonry cavity, timber-frame and steel-frame wall types.
Following rigorous testing, Alreflex ThermaEdge has been scientifically proven to prevent mould growth using industry-recognised numerical simulations that model temperature distribution within the wall and ground floor.
Not only is Alreflex ThermaEdge the only thermal bridging perimeter insulation that uses a radiant barrier to halt heat flow, but Alreflex ThermaEdge is the only thermal bridging perimeter insulation that is flexible enough to be wrapped over other obstructions in the cavity such as damp proof membranes and telescopic vents. Other perimeter insulation products are typically rigid boards that have to be cut to fit on site and badly wedged in place, leaving gaps where heat is readily lost by cold air circulation.
Commenting on this announcement, Hugo Brown, Joint Managing Director at Thermal Economics said, “We feel our entry solves a big issue in the industry in terms of cold bridging at a very important junction. Our solution is a unique product that makes it easy to continue the line of insulation at the ground floor perimeters and prevent heat loss by thermal bridging; which stops condensation and mould growth. We are looking forward to attending the gala dinner and hope to bring an award home wth us! Best of luck to all the nominees. It looks like there are some strong entries this year.”
The winners will be announced at the Gala Dinner in London on Friday 9th November. We hope to see you there!
